Poetry Reading and Essay Contest celebrate Afro-American and Afro-Cuban writing
On Wednesday, March 3, 2010, USINT hosted a cultural event to celebrate the culmination of Afro-American History Month. Participants shared readings by well-known Afro-American and Afro-Cuban poets and discussed the main themes running through the writings and the background for their emergence. PAO Gloria Berbena announced the top three winners of the "I have a Dream" essay contest in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. and presented certificates of participation to all entrants.
Afro-American History Month is an annual celebration held to recognize the role of and accomplishments of Afro-Americans in the United States. USINT also hosted an exhibit on Afro-American movie stars and a digital video conference with a professor from DePaul University in Chicago on racial issues.
