USINT announces winners of contest “Expressions of Afro-Cuban Art”

A panel of judges from USINT selected the three Grand Prize Winners from a field of ten finalists who had been selected via public voting by the U.S. Interests Section (USINT) facebook community. 

Erik Olivera Rubio took the First Prize for "Yemaya".  The second prize was awarded to Eduardo Daniel Valdés for "Solemnidad", and the third prize went to Yohandry Leyva Prieto for "Achemi".  The judges also chose three Honorable Mentions:  "Tearing" ("rasgando") by Fhordam Lesnik (Yasser Barbier Romero) and "Exótica" by Osvaldo Jacinto Llins.  The other finalists included Jorge Rene Gomez Manzano, Juan Antonio Madrazo Luna, Celia Domínguez Urías and Victor Alexis Puig.

The contest was launched on January 19 via the USINT facebook site, located at www.facebook.com/havana.usint.  Contestants were invited to submit up to two digital images of artwork that represented Afro-Cubanism.  The USINT facebook community selected the ten (10) finalists using a system of public voting, and a panel of judges from USINT chose the Grand Prize winners from the field of ten finalists. 

The winning images will be on display at USINT from March 29 - April 18, 2011.
