Celebrating Women’s History Month Through Art
USINT Chief of Mission Jonathan Farrar and Public Affairs Officer Gloria Berbena greet Juan Moreira upon arrival to the inauguration. April 7, 2010
On April 7, 2010, friends from the worlds of art and culture, media and diplomacy gathered at the home of U.S. Interests Section (USINT) Chief of Mission Jonathan Farrar to inaugurate an exhibition of art with a very special theme: all the work on display was created by female artists. The exhibition was one of the activities organized by USINT in honor of Women's History Month, a celebration during the month of May that recognizes the achievements of women.
The exhibition represented a wide range of styles and themes, and featured art in a variety of media including paintings in acrylic and mixed media, silk screens, lithographs and photography. Among the artists participating in the exhibition was Janis Wilkins, an American photographer, who provided five iconic images of classic American cars set against backdrops of typical Havana buildings.
Women's History Month was first celebrated in 1980 and includes International Women's Day on March 8. It underscores the United States' commitment to women's rights, both at the national and global level. These include collaborating with the United Nations and other international institutions to support women's equality and to curtail violence against women and girls, especially in situations of war and conflict. In Havana, other USINT activities in honor of Women's History Month included a writing contest which invited contestants to submit work to the theme of "Ser Mujer"
Following its inauguration on April 7, the exhibition moves to the U.S. Interests Section in Vedado, where it will be on display through May 10. Viewing by appointment, tel. 53-7-833-3967.
