Art Auction for Cancer Kids Raises Over $20,000
Members from different diplomatic missions to Cuba joined forces over the weekend of January 16 to participate in an art auction to raise funds for Cuban children who have been diagnosed with cancer. All the pieces offered for auction were donated by the artists themselves and included works by notable Cuban artists such as Manuel Mendive, Pedro Pablo Oliva, Eduardo Ponjuán, and Kadir and Kelvin López. Also included in the auction were paintings by children with cancer.
The auction took place on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at the home of US Interests Section Chief of Mission Mr. Jonathan Farrar and Mrs. Terry Farrar. The event was enthusiastically supported, raising over $20,000. All profits were donated to a Cuban group that supports children and young adults who suffer from cancer or are in remission; the group in turn committed 10% of the total funds to Haitian earthquake relief efforts.
