The Art of Creativity: Conversations with Juan Carlos Cremata Malberti
Gloria Berbena, USINT Public Affairs Officer, recently hosted a presentation by Cuban filmmaker and director Juan Carlos Cremata Malberti about his work for film, television and theater. A large gathering of Cuban screen writers, producers, actors and other luminaries offered profuse praise for Juan Carlos Cremata Malberti and candid comments about their experiences in the performing arts.
The intriguing title of the presentation, "In & Out", refers to the movement of people (including Juan Carlos Cremata Malberti) and their talents, directing techniques and other tools of the trade between different performing arts genres. The theme also touches on Juan Carlos Cremata's work inside and outside of Cuba. During the presentation, Juan Carlos Cremata Malberti used clips from a selection of his films and live performances, including Nada, Viva Cuba and El Frigidaire de Copi, to explain his work.
Juan Carlos Cremata Malberti has been involved in filmmaking and the theater since 1981, when he worked with the Cuban Television & Radio Institute (ICRT by its Spanish acronym). He has directed numerous films, including the award winning Nada (2001), Viva Cuba (2005), which won a prize at the Cannes Film Festival, and El Premio Flaco (2009). His films have been screened at festivals all over the world, and he has worked and lectured in Argentina, Chile, Panama, Germany, France and the United States. Juan Carlos Cremata Malberti currently directs El Ingenio, an independent theater group. He is a member of the Nation Union of Cuban Writers and Actors (UNEAC by its Spanish acronym).
