USINT hosted a graduation ceremony for the 26 participants in the “Introduction to Journalism” course

June 19, 2012 – USINT hosted a graduation ceremony for the 26 participants in the “Introduction to Journalism” course which began on February 2.  Chargé Charles “Chip” Barclay offered words of congratulations and handed out the graduation certificates.  Florida International University professors John Virtue and Jorge Dalmau also recognized, via digital video conference, the dedication and hard work of the participants.

The 20-week “Introduction to Journalism” course was offered one afternoon a week for Cuban participants ranging from 20 to 72 years in age.  The course is offered by professors of the International Media Center at Florida International University for aspiring independent journalists.  It focuses on themes such as “Thinking Like a Writer”, “Social Journalism”, “Broadcast Journalism”, and “Use of the Internet for Investigative Journalism”.  The course is offered twice annually and is intended to support the free flow of information to, from and within Cuba.
