USINT Hosts Video Conference on Press Freedom
February 22, 2012 – USINT hosted a video conference entitled “Freedom of Expression and of the Press”, led by Panamanian Luis Manuel Botello, Senior Program Director of Special Projects at the Washington-based International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) with participation by Dr. Sallie Hughes, professor of Journalism and Latin American Studies at the University of Miami, and Zita Arocha, senior lecturer at the Department of Communication, University of Texas El Paso.
During the event, the three presenters spoke on a variety of themes related to press freedom and freedom of expression, including press freedom in Latin America, principal threats to freedom of the press, the impact of technology on journalism and the history of press freedom. Guests at the event included Cuban independent journalists and bloggers, who shared their views on the topic.
This is the second in a series of video conferences about journalism and press freedom organized by USINT. These events provide a forum for open, respectful discussion about topics of mutual interest.
