USINT launchess week-long film series in commemoration of International Human Rights Day
On Monday, December 6, USINT launched a week-long commemoration of International Human Rights Day with the screening of "Nashville-We Were Warriors", a documentary covering a 1960's civil rights campaign to end desegregation in downtown Nashville, Tennessee, U.S.A. Throughout the week, different films will be screened that focus on civil rights struggles around the world.
In his welcome remarks, USINT Chief of Mission Jonathan Farrar reminded guests of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which formally recognizes the rights of individuals and charges governments with respecting those rights. Mr. Farrar underscored the importance of equality and individual rights to the American people, and the challenges faced around the world to extend those rights universally.
International Human Rights Day is celebrated annually on December 10, the anniversary of the official adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations.
