On Friday, January 29, 2010, the US Interests Section (USINT) hosted a charity lunch to raise funds for Haiti relief and reconstruction efforts.  A special menu of typical Cuban fare - roast pork, rice and beans, roast cassava, fried green plantains and salad - was donated by USINT's Community Liaison Office, and was followed by a selection of desserts and pastries donated by Americans serving at the mission.  Diners were asked to make a minimum donation of CUC5; however many chose to contribute more to this worthy cause, helping to raise US$1,400.  All monies raised are being donated to the Foreign Service National (FSN) Emergency Relief Fund.  This fund responds to crises affecting FSN employees at US missions overseas after natural disasters, civil unrest and other extraneous events.

US diplomatic missions around the world are hosting similar events to raise funds for Haiti relief efforts.  Activities have included bake sales, breakfasts, walkathons and quiz nights, involving the international American community in this global effort to reconstruct Haiti following the massive earthquake on January 12.
