USINT inaugurates Human Rights Day activities with “historic” DVC
In celebration of Human Rights Day December 10, the U.S. Interests Section hosted a special videoconference with author, scholar, and U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See Mary Ann Glendon, who chronicled the history of the drafting of the 60-year old document in her definitive 2001 book “A World Made New: Eleanor Roosevelt and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”
Speaking from Rome, Ambassador Glendon highlighted the contributions of not only Mrs. Roosevelt, but delegates from many Latin America and Caribbean nations -- including Cuba—who contributed ideas and compromise language that helped bridge the differences between cultures and ideologies.
Ambassador Glendon, who was knowledgeable and gracious, answered questions posed by the post’s guests, several of whom were civil rights activists and lawyers in their own right. Many commented afterwards that it was one of the best DVCs the USINT had ever hosted, and only regretted that “A World Made New” was not available in Spanish. A select group from DRL, IO, and L, watched this DVC from Washington and facilitated the language interpretation
