USINT Dances to a Military Beat at Marine Corps Birthday Ball
On Saturday, 14 November, 2009, the US Interests Section celebrated the 234th anniversary of the United States Marine Corps with a gala dinner and dance that has become an annual tradition at US missions around the world. USINT Chief of Mission, Jonathan Farrar, and Mrs. Farrar hosted the sparkling event, which was attended by nearly 150 USINT staff and their friends from other missions and organizations in Cuba.
The Marine Corps Guard opened the evening's celebrations by sharing a message from the Commandant of the Marine Corps with all present. This was followed by the official presentation of the Guard of Honor and the playing of the National Anthem of the United States of America. During a thoughtful speech, guest of honor and USINT Chief of Mission Jonathan Farrar reminded all those present of the sacrifices that Marines make to ensure the safety and security of US foreign missions around the world. Shortly after, the Marine Staff Sergeant led the cutting of the Marine Corps birthday cake, which was first shared with the guest of honor, Mr. Jonathan Farrar, and then with the oldest and youngest marines present. Once the official activities were complete, guests sat down to a splendid dinner and enjoyed dancing until the wee hours to the sounds of rock band Los Kents.
