February 1, 2011
During a small but meaningful awards ceremony the winners of the recent photography contest, "Postcards from Home: Show Us Where You're From", were presented with their prizes.
The judges, who included USINT Chargé d'Affaires Charles V. Barclay and other USINT personnel, presented the prizes to the happy winners: Giselle Gonzales Alpizar who won the first prize for ‘Ayer y Hoy', Sandra Herrera Petrova, placed second for ‘La Maravilla', Esnel González Ávila, winner of the third prize for ‘Mi Hogar', and Héctor Colina Ortega and Liuba Moreno who each received an Honorable Mention for ‘Cuba: naturaleza muerta' and ‘Hacia todas partes voy' respectively. The prizes consisted of photographic equipment and publications.
The contest was launched on December 3, and ran through December 17. Contestants were invited to submit up to two images together with a description of why the image represents "home". Over 30 individuals participated, and a total of 55 images were received. The first stage of judging involved USINT's facebook community in the selection of the ten finalists via public voting. A panel of judges selected the Grand Prize winners from the field of ten finalists.
The winning images, together with the images selected as finalists, will be on display at USINT from February 1-15, 2011.
